Rare Chinese antique, outstanding zhou dynasty celadon jade deer stag. This lovely, Chinese, West zhou dynasty celadon jade comes from an old French collection. It has been in my possession for over 20 years.
The Staghead is raised, looking forward. The mouth is closed, the big ears are opened behind, and the horns are long and wide. The eyes are wide, with a round pupil, slightly eroded on both sides. The body is of a flat design and, rather, plump of protruding chest and arched back. He is standing on his hind legs, as if jumping, while his forelegs legs are bent and close to the chest.
There is a straight line incision running from the head all the way to the bottom. There are few deep-cut incisions that create the outlines. There is a hole at the back of the neck, to enable wearing. On one side the hole is small and delicate, the other side, where it was drilled, wide, then narrow. The jade is of a light celadon color with deep erosion and some mild calcification, due to its location underground.
There are some red inclusions in the eyes, and some of the deep cuts, typical for its age.
