Auctions is pleased to offer a fine Chinese green Jade Nephrite Toggle depicting a bat (fu), from China. While it is common knowledge that the Chinese have been master carvers of jade and other hard stone ritual and decorative objects since Neolithic times, and almost everyone interested in Asian art has knowledge of netsuke, relatively few people, however, are familiar with the Chinese equivalent of netsuke, the ubiquitous toggle. A toggle was used by the Chinese as counterweights on the cords of pipe bags and other small bags. Chinese clothes were not well provided with pockets, so that bags which could be suspended through the belt were useful articles of attire. Wood and jade were the most commonly used materials to make toggles. The designs used could be plain and utilitarian or highly ornate with decorative symbols. The motifs were very varied and were often drawn from Chinese legends and mythology. This beautifully textured and exquisitely carved "celadon" hued jade toggle depicts a bat. The most ubiquitous and auspicious of all symbols in Chinese culture.
Bat images can be found on a wide variety of objects, such as paintings, chinaware, architecture, embroidery, furniture, etc. Be a visual pun for "good fortune" or happiness fu.
